The Department of Pathophysiology and Clinical Pathophysiology was founded in 1945. The position of head of department has been held by the following university professors:

1945 - Piotr Andreev

1945-1948, 1950-1955, 1961-1963 - Bronislava Kurţer

1948-1950 - Piotr Ermolaev

1955-1958 - Nicolai Colpicov

1958-1961 - Evghenii Cucinski

1963 - 1990 - Andrei Zorkin

1990 - 1994 - Leonid Cobâleanschi

1994. 2001 - Porfirie Cazacu

2001 - 2018 - Vasile Lutan

2018 - current - Valeriu Cobeț

Until 1963, efforts have been undertaken to create the material base of the Department and to supplement the academic staff with local specialists - the future professors Alexandru Robu and Andrei Dovganschi, who completed their PhD at St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy.

In 1963, Professor Andrei Zorkin, who was transferred from St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy to Chisinau, was elected head of the Department by competition. Professor Andrei Zorkin initiated a real restructuring of the Department’s didactic work and scientific activity according to the model of the Military Medical Academy. The curriculum, course plans and practical works were revised, with emphasis on demonstrating experiments on laboratory animals, showing films for educational purposes, etc.

Scientific research has been directed to study the pathogenetic mechanisms of traumatic and visceral shock, hypokinesia, tetanus, combined trauma (shock and ionizing radiation). Fundamental research has been initiated in the study of the spectrum of amino acids and steroid hormones, biogenic amines. Under the leadership of Professor A. Zorkin, the following collaborators of the Department defended their PhD theses in medical sciences: V. Niguleanu, A. Iarovoi, L. Lâsâi, L. Cobâleanschi, P. Cazacu, V. Lutan, V. Burlacu, V. Ouatu, T. Zorkin and Doctor Habilitated dissertations: B. Kurţer, A. Dovganschi, V. Niguleanu, A. Goranschi, L. Cobâleanschi, L. Lâsăi. Overall, under the guidance of Professor A. Zorkin, 9 Doctor Habilitated dissertations and 33 PhD theses in medical sciences were defended, and 4 monographs, 8 collections of scientific papers, and about 1000 research articles were published.

During the years 1990-1994, the Department was headed by L. Cobîleanschi, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, university professor, who further    improved the didactic work and deepened the scientific research at molecular level. During that period of national revival and return to the Romanian language, a Romanian-Russian-French Explanatory Pathophysiological Dictionary (L. Cobîleanschi, P. Cazacu, V. Lutan and V. Ţuşco), a Compendium of Practical Works on Pathophysiology (L. Cobîleanschi, P. Cazacu, A. Iarovoi, A. Dovganski), and an Introduction to immunopathology (A. Iarovoi, P. Cazacu) were published.

The scientific research of the Department focused on studying metabolic processes in organs and tissues after severe mechanical trauma caused by long-term compression of soft tissues, the pathogenetic role of lipid peroxidation and lysosomal mechanisms in mechanical trauma and the protective effect of hyperbaric oxygen. For the first time, a complex biochemical, functional and morphological study was performed on laboratory animals adapted and maladapted to hypoxia. Under the leadership of professor L. Cobâleanschi, 3 Doctor Habilitated theses and 6 PhD theses in medical sciences were defended, including by the Department staff members Eleonora Borş, Valeriu Gafencu, Alexandru Derbenţev, Victor Marcenco.

Between 1994-2001, the Department was headed by university professor P. Cazacu. During these years, the foundations were laid for the implementation of information technologies in the teaching process. The department was equipped with computers. An innovative program of self-control and estimation of knowledge in pathophysiology was developed. Prof. P. Cazacu published a Pathophysiology manual. 1000 computer tests. The scientific investigations initiated by Prof. L. Cobâleanschi jointly with professor P. Cazacu, as scientific consultant, resulted in the defense of doctoral theses in medical sciences by S. Todiraş, C. Hangan, A. Vişnevschi and E. Cobâleanschi.

From 2001 until now, university professor Vasile Lutan has been serving as head of the Department of Pathophysiology and Clinical Pathophysiology. During this period, steps have been taken in order to adjust the teaching process to European standards. The study programs for all faculties were revised and the test set for the pathophysiology examinations were developed.

At the initiative of professor V. Lutan, the collaborators of the Department developed the following works: Medical Pathophysiology manual (vol.I and II), Collection of situation problems, Theoretical course for the specialty Dentistry, and the Pathology manual for Pharmacy specialty. The main research directions of the Department focused on the study of the pathogenesis of combustion and hemorrhagic shock, including the role of hyaluronic acid and proinflammatory cytokines, local and systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of hemorrhagic shock. Five PhD theses in biology and medicine (Mariana Bezdrâghin, Elina Pelin, Oleg Galbur, Angela Bîtca, Victoria Rotaru) and one Doctor Habilitated thesis in Medical Sciences (Anatol Vişnevschi) were defended under the guidance of professor V. Lutan.

The Department of Pathophysiology hosted prestigious scientific forums: Plenary of the USSR Physiopathologists (1968), SHOCK All-Union Symposium of Pathophysiologists (1971), All-Union Scientific Conference Pathogenetic Treatment of Severe Trauma (1981), All-Union Congress of Pathophysiologists (1989), All-Union Scientific Conference on Extreme States (1991).

The collaborators of the Department presented scientific materials on pathophysiology at All-Union congresses (Bacu, 1970; Tashkent, 1976; Tbilisi, 1982) and international congresses (Moscow, 1991; Tokyo, 1994), world congresses (2016, 2018) and European congresses (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) of cardiology.
